Accident Summary:
.On 7 Jul 68 at 1530 hours WO Crosby was completing an in-country orientation and standardization check ride with WO Flagg. WO Crosby was in the process of demonstrating an autorotation with a termination with power in a UH-1B (gunship). The UH-1B was equipped with mini guns and two 7 round launcher pods with rockets. The autorotation was entered at 800 feet of altitude and 80 knots of indicated airspeed. Upon entry the collective was lowered, and the throttle rolled off to flight idle. The UH-1B's indicated airspeed was reduced to 60 knots of indicated airspeed and the RPM was noted to have stabilized at 6400 RPM. The gas producer percentage was between 60 and 62 indicating normal operations, while all engine and flight instruments were within normal operating limits. A rate of descent of 1500 feet per minute was noted. At approximately 75 to 100 feet a flare was started and the throttle was being started back in. At apprximately 50 feet the throttle was to the full on position. At this time the rate of descent appeared to increase. WO Crosby noted that he pulled his initial pitch pull earlier than usual, because of his fast rate of descent. Although the initial pitch pull had some effect and slowed the rate of descent, it was not enough to prevent the aircraft from touching down hard. The aircraft contacted the ground with low RPM, causing the skids to collapse and the main rotor to flex down and cut the tail rotor drive shaft. The aircraft then slid forward and turned approximately 90 degrees to the right before coming to a halt. At this time the engine was still running and the tachometer was noted to be showing an RPM of 5500. The autorotation was made on a heading of 220 degrees and the wind was 240/10. The aircraft was immediately shut down and all switches turned to the off position
