. AIRCRAFT WAS AT A LOW HOVER AWAITING TROOP PICKUP. THE LZ WAS FAIRLY CLEAR EXCEPT FOR NUMEROUS STUMPS IN THE AREA. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SITTING LIGHTLY ON THE GROUND WHEN IT SETTLE ONTO A STUMP. THE MISSION WAS CONTINUED AND THE AIRCRAFT FLEW BACK TO HOME STATION.\\

Accident Summary:
. ON 17 FEBRAURY 1972, AIRCRAFT ^65-10083^, A UH-1H ASSIGNED TO THE ^3RD AVN CO^, WAS INVOLVED IN A MAJOR AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT. WRITTEN ON THE UNIT MISSION BOARD FOR THE DAY WERE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL A/C'S TO BRING THEIR AIRCRAFT TO CAMP ENARLI BY 1800 HOURS THAT EVENING, AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THEIR DAILY MISSION, TO RENDEZUOUS FOR A COMPANY FLY-BY. THE CREW MEMBER OF ^083^ WERE, ^1LT LAYMON E. ROBERTS, 444-42-1422^, AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, ^1LT EDWARD L. BARRY, 136-40-4859^, PILOT, ^SP/4 SHERRAL K. ZITTING, 528-82-6619^, CREWCHIEF, ^SP/4 REIHARD MUELLER, 311-58-9900^, GUNNER. ^1LT ROBERTS^ COMPLETED HIS ASSIGNED MISSION AT 1530. AT 1730 HOURS, AFTER EATING CHOW, ^083^ AND CREW DEPARTED FOR CAMP ENARIL, A FLIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY TEN MINUTES. UPON ARRIVAL THEY SHUT THEIR AIRCRAFT DOWN TO WAIT FOR ALL THE OTHER AIRCRAFT TO ARRIVE. AT 1810 HOURS EIGHT AIRCRAFT HAD ARRIVED, PILOTS AND CREWS WERE BRIEFED AND AT APPROXIMATELY 1830 THE FLIGHT DEPARTED, AND FROMED INTO TWO DIAMOND FORMATIONS. THE FORMATION MADE A DOWN WIND PASS OVER THE RUNWAY AT CAMP HOLLOWAY, MADE A LEFT TURN AND THE FLIGHT CAME UP TRAIL FORMATION. THE FLIGHT ENTERED A CLOSE IN LEFT DOWN WIND LEG AT APPROXIMATELY 300' TO 400' AGL. ON THE TURN FROM DOWN WIND TO FINAL, CHALK FIVE AIRCRAFT ^65-10083^, DESCENDED TO LOW AND IMPACTED THE GROUND IN A NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE, BREAKING THE TAIL BOOM, SEVERING THE 90 DEGREE GEAR BOX AND TAIL ROTOR FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR APPROXIMATELY 75 TO 100 FEET, SPINNING TO THE RIGHT. WHILE SPINNING AND MOVING IN A SOUTHEASTERLY DIRECTION, THE AIRCRAFT BROKE THROUGH WIRES, THE RIGHT SIDE STRUCK A CONCRETE UTILITY POLE AND STILL SPINNING, COMPLETELY SEVERED THE TAIL BOOM FROM THE AIRCRAFT. JUST PRIOR TO FINAL IMPACT THE GUNNER WAS THROWN CLEAR OF THE AIRCRAFT, BREAKING BOTH LEGS BELOW THE KNEE. ALSO PRIOR TO FINAL IMPACT, THE MAIN ROTOR, HEAD ASSEMBLY, AND THE RIGHT SKID WERE BROKEN OFF AND THROWN CLEAR. AFTER MOVING 287 FEET FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT, THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON ITS LEFT SIDE. APPROXIMATELY TWO TO THREE MINUTES AFTER THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST, CHALK 8 IN THE FLIGHT, LANDED AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF CRASH RESCUE AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL WHO ARRIVED IMMEDIATELY AFTER, THE CREW WAS MED-EVACED TO THE 1J AERIAL POST HOSPITAL ABOUT TWO MILES AWAY.\\
