Accident Summary:
. THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF ON A RECONNAISSANCE MISSION AS THE WINGMAN OF ANOTHER AH-1G TO EXCORT TWO LOH AIRCRAFT. BOTH AH-1G AIRCRAFT HAD 1000 POUNDS OF FUEL ON BOARD ON TAKE-OFF AS MEASURED BY THE FUEL GAGE. AFTER 1.6 HOURS OF FLIGHT, THE 10% FUEL CAUTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED. SHORTLY AFTER THE 10% LIGHT, THE AFT FUEL BOOST PUMP CAUTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED. AFTER FIVE MORE MINUTES OF FLIGHT, THE PILOT CALLED THE LEAD AIRCRAFT AND STATED THAT HE HAD 50 POUNDS OF FUEL REMAINING. AH-1G ^67-15842^ EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FAILURE ON SHORT FINAL APPROACH AND ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND CRASHED. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN WITH THE TAIL AND BOTH SKICS AND SLID 35 FT ON THE TURRET AND BELLY OF THE AIRCRAFT AS THE SKIDS SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT ON IMPACT. THE MAIN ROTOR BLADE STRUCK THE TAIL BOOM AND SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AT THE MAST. THE AIRCRAFT PIVOTED TO THE LEFT FROM INITIAL TOUCHDOWN WHEN THE MAIN ROTOR BLADE STRUCK THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT AND COPILOT WERE EVACUATED TO THE HOSPITAL AT CHU LAI. THE AIRCRAFT WAS PHOTOGRAPHED AND A SKETCH WAS MADE PRIOR TO EVACUATION OF THE WRECKAGE TO CHU LAI.\\
