Accident Summary:
. ON 21 SEPTEMBER 1971, THE CREW OF AH-1G SN: ^68-15183^ WAS ON AN AUTHORIZED COMBAT PRIORITY MISSION. AFTER LEAVING BEARCAT, RVN, THE CREW PROCEEDED UPTHE SOUTH SIDE OF QL1 ENROUTE TO FIRE SUPPORT BASE MACE. OVER THE TOWN OF TRANG BOM THE AIRCRAFT COMBAT COMMANDER STARTED TO APPLY POWER TO CATCH UP TO THE LEAD COBRA OF THE FIRE TEAM. THE AIRCRAFT WAS AT AN ALTITUDE OF 1200 FEET INDICATED AND 100 KNOTS OF AIRSPEED WITH A POWER SETTING OF 30 POUNDS OF TORQUE. WITH AN INCREASE OF POWER FROM 30 PUUNDS OF TORQUE THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER IMMEDIATELY ENTERED AUTOROTATION, TRANSMITTED HIS MAY-DAY CALL, AND STARTED A 180 DEGREE AUTOROTATIVE TURN TO THE LEFT. UPON ENTERING AUTOROTATION THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER THOUGHT OF THE POSSIBILITY OF JETTISONING HIS ROCKET PODS BUT DUE TOT HE FACT THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS OVER THE TOWN HE DECIDED NOT TO JETTISON HIS ROCKET PODS. WHILE IN THE TURN THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER NOTICED THE ROTOR RPM WAS IN THE HIGH GREEN AND GAS PRODUCER WAS DROPPING RAPIDLY. HE THEN MADE AN ATTEMPT TO REGAIN ENGINE POWER BY PUTTING THE GOVERNOR IN EMERGENCY POSITION. BUT AT THAT TIME THE GAS PRODUCER WAS PASSING THROUGH 20% TO 15%. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER THEN ROLLED THE THROTTLE FULL OFF AND TURNED THE MAIN FUEL OFF. WHILE IN THE TURN THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER SPOTTED A LARGE FIELD A FIELD AND SET UP FOR A MAXIMUM GLIDE AUTOROTATION LANDING. THE ROTOR RPM OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS STILL IN THE HIGH GREEN AND THE ARCRAFT WAS IN TRIM. ABOUT 100 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER INITIATED A DECELERATING ATTITUDE TO SLOW THE AIRCRAFT. AT ABOUT 10 FEET TO 20 FEET THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER APPLIED INITIAL PITCH PULL, IN ORDER TO CUSHION HIS DESCENT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS CARRYING AN ARMAMENT OF 28 TEN POUND ROCKETS ON THE OUTBOARD PDDS, 28 SEVENTEEN POUNDS ROCKETS ON THE INBOARD PODS, 2000 ROUNDS OF 7.62 MINIGUN, 150 ROUNDS OF 40MM, AND HAD 720 POUNDS OF FUEL. BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT WHEN INITIAL PITCH PULL WAS APPLIED NO NOTICEABLE REDUCTION IN RATE OF DESCENT OCCURED. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER IMMEDIATELY APPLIED ALL REMAINING COLLECTIVE TO CUSHION HIS LANDING PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND IN A DECELERATING ATTITUDE WITH A NOTICEABLY HIGH GROUND SPEED. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE WING WAS OFF THE AIRCRAFT'S RIGHT NOSE. THE AIRCRAFT SKIDDED ABOUT 60 FEET BEFORE FINALLY COMING TO REST. DURING THE COURSE OF THE SKID, THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED AND LEFT THE GROUND ONE TIME: ON THE RETURN TO THE GROUND THE STINGER OF THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER APPLIED AFT CYCLIC TO DECREASE HIS GROUND RUN AND WHEN THE AIRCRAFT'S STINGER HIT, THE ROTOR BLADES FLEXED STRIKING THE TAIL BOOM. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT FINALLY CAME TO REST THE SKIDS WERE BENT, THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE TAIL BOOM AND MAIN ROTOR BLADE. THE CREW STAYED WITH THE AIRCRAFT UNTIL A RECOVERY TEAM ARRIVED.\\
