. AT APPROXIMATELY 1800 HOURS ON 27 SEP 1970 THE MISSION TO FLY TO CAN THO AND PICK UP REPLACEMENTS WAS ASSIGNED AND THE CREW ASSEMBLED. NORMAL PRE-FLIGHT ACTIVITIES (FLIGHT PLAN FILED, PRE-FLIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT ACCOMPLISHED, ENGINE RUN-UP) WERE ACCOMPLISHED. TAKE-OFF CLEARANCE WAS REQUESTED, GRANTED, AND A HOVER FROM REVETMENT 114 ATTEMPTED. AS THE AIRCRAFT WAS CLEARING THE REVETMENT, THE NOSE YAWED SLIGHTLY LEFT AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STINGER HIT THE REVETMENT, SETTING UP A TREMENDOUS VIBRATION IN THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT APPLIED AFT CYCLIC AND THE AIRCRAFT BACKED UP. THE 1ST PILOT BOTTOMED THE COLLECTIVE. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND HEADING 020 DEGREES IN A SLIGHT RIGHT WING LOW ATTITUDE. THE 42-DEGREE GEAR BOX WAS SEVERED AT STATION 420. THE TRANSMISSION, MAST, MAIN ROTOR BLADE, AND BLADES WERE TORN FROM THE AIRCRAFT, AND REMAINED ATTACHED TO THE AIRCRAFT BY HYDRAULIC LINES, PUSH-PULL TUBES, OIL LINES, AND WLECTRICAL WIRING. \\
